FAQ DubyaSpeak's world headquarters in downtown Greybull, Wyoming (OK, we did make this up) WHY DOES DUBYASPEAK.COM EXIST, AND HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN AROUND?
The quote collection found on DubyaSpeak.com had its start back in 2000, where it was part of a now defunct humor website. The idea was to offer it as a sequel to a similar collection of Dan Quayle quotes hosted on the same site. We really never expected that anyone could top Dan Quayle, but we were soon proven wrong. For a period of time, both Dan Quayle and Dubya were running for the GOP presidential nomination. Who could have asked for anything more? After the Florida debacle resulted in Dubya's installation in power in 2001, we realized we had a lot more work ahead of us, and the mission to be the Internet's largest and most complete collection of genuine Dubya quotes began in earnest. DubyaSpeak.com was born. The quotes on this site are offered as a public service to both the American public and the rest of the world. Our basic motivation has been the same from the start: Dubya says so many goofy, incorrect, misleading, grammatically-challenged, ignorant, scary, dumb, unbelievable, baffling and hilarious things that they absolutely must be recorded, lest they be forgotten. This notion was the genesis of our motto: We record the damage. ARE THESE QUOTES FOR REAL?
Yes, they are. All quotes are legitimate and have been verified as being spoken by Dubya. Whatever goes into the collection is checked against the official White House transcript and/or multiple press accounts (meaning not just the one AP report used by nearly every commerical US news outlet), and also the audio/video of Dubya's appearance when available. We do not cite individual sources for each quote as that would be exhausting and pointless, and at the end of the day, the irrefutable source is Dubya's own mouth. Although we go to great lengths to ensure the accuracy of the quotes in our collection, if any quote is found to be in error or taken out of context, it is corrected/removed immediately. We have no editorial interest in misleading anyone, even for a laugh. Please be assured that all you see here is the 100% honest truth. After all, who would waste their time making stuff up, when Dubya's giving it away for free? WHY IS PRESIDENT BUSH CALLED DUBYA?
Dubya's real name is George W. Bush (W. stands for "Walker"). Pronounce the letter W with a lazy Texas drawl, and bingo! - "Dubya". The nickname has been credited to columnist Molly Ivins, who coined it back in 1995 when Dubya was the Governor of Texas. WHAT ARE YOUR SOURCES?
Believe it or not, a large portion of the quotes featured in the DubyaSpeak collection comes from the White House homepage. We also keep an eye on the Republican News Network, also known as "Fox News", because they love covering Dubya speaking engagements. Put together, these two pro-Dubya outlets provide a fairly reliable way to compare notes and discover where the official White House transcript is being overly generous in recording Dubya's pronouncements. Other sources used to obtain the musings of the Mangler-in-Chief are the familiar mainstream media outlets, such as the Washington Post, New York Times, the Guardian, USA Today, CNN and MSNBC. And of course, faithful readers send quotes in all the time (Thanks!). These, too, are all verified before being posted. WHY ARE YOU MAKING FUN OF THE PRESIDENT INSTEAD OF STANDING BEHIND HIM IN A TIME OF WAR?
Being at war doesn't render Dubya's frequent verbal mishaps unfunny. And if I'm not mistaken, a person's patriotism is not defined by blind faith in the nation's leadership. It's a little more sophisticated than that. If this is an important issue to you, please refer to the Sticks & Stones section for a greater exposition of DubyaSpeak.com's feelings. Plus, it has to be said that Dubya's entire presidency ended up being a time of war, so when would have been convenient to start? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW THAT DUBYA'S REIGN IS OVER?
To the extent possible, DubyaSpeak.com will continue to operate and chronicle Dubya's missteps beyond his last day of office. We suspect he'll go right on and entertain/puzzle us for years to come, and the best part is that he no longer has any remaining power over people's lives and the arc of history. He can just be Dubya, and we'll record the damage as always. In addition, considering the large stockpile of data and content we've accumulated over the years, it would be a shame to retire it, so our plan is to leave it all up as an open repository for folks to use and enjoy.
